Question:
I was hoping you could settle a bet for me. I recently caught the premiere of the new show The Inside on Fox. Coming from the same minds that gave me countless good episodes of Buffy, Angel and Wonderfalls, it had to be good, and I wasn't disappointed. My friend bet that Fox would cancel it after four episodes, I said six. Who do you think is right on this one? Considering that it's really good and well written, Fox would have to cancel it, leave episodes unaired and replace it with some mindless reality show. (Yes, I'm bitter.) — Mike
Matt:
I wish I liked The Inside as much as you. (I preferred TNT's new crime drama, The Closer, which has the makings of a major hit. For more of my thoughts about some of the new summer shows, check out my June 14 Dispatch. I basically found Inside to be ugly and derivative. The characters are deeply uninteresting, with the possible exception of its Clarice-clone lead and Peter Coyote's manipulative boss.) But to answer your question: Fox may actually let this one run for a change, despite its slow start in the ratings. Expectations are lower this time of year, and this one has the bad luck of airing against an actual summer hit — ABC's Dancing with the Stars. So I guess you win the bet, because I do think Fox will let at least six episodes be seen. But one thing concerns me in your e-mail: the notion that because a producer's prior credits are solid, the new show "has to be good." I'm all for loyalty, but an open mind is a terrible thing to waste on a show like The Inside. To continue this discussion...
