The only thing really missing is humor. There’s no pithy Joss Whedon banter full of references. So, this is going to be his serious show. It seems like a missed opportunity because all the gravitas creates an unrelatable distance. They could be having fun with the premise.
Joss--never one to shy away from innovation--says one of the more intriguing elements of Dollhouse is the way he will be playing with perspective. Instead of just showing episodes just from Echo's point of view, they’ll come from all over: clients, other Actives, and--this is the one that got me excited--one episode (the sixth) from the perspective of a normal man on the street.
Terry Pratchett skrev:There are, it has been said, two types of people in the world. There are those who, when presented with a glass that is exactly half full, say: this glass is half full. And then there are those who say: this glass is half empty.
The world belongs, however, to those who can look at the glass and say: What's up with this glass? Excuse me? Excuse me? This is my glass? I don't think so. My glass was full! And it was a bigger glass! Who's been pinching my beer?
Based on the pilot, "Dollhouse" seems much less playful than some of your previous shows.
It is less playful, which doesn't mean we don't play. There's a lot of silliness and repartee and fun, but first we have to win over the world. I think the first episodes are trying to get people to understand and accept how this world works. But the show really finds itself in the second half. It's really where we start to go, "Ohhhhhh, we can do thiiiis. Right, this is why we showed up!" And so I'm hoping people will stick with it.
Few situation comedies are as nakedly nutty as Fox's newest drama, which goes to show you how topsy and turvy pop culture is becoming. If "Dollhouse," a pretentious and risible jumble premiering tonight on that most quixotic of national networks, were a piece of music, it would have to be some sort of funky-junky, hip-hop, rinky-tinky, ragtime madrigal.
