The show is filmed on what used to be the Buffy the Vampire Slayer sets, and Minear’s new office is Joss Whedon’s old office.
Where Sunnydale’s cemetery once stood, there’s now the Wilshire offices of the FBI’s Violent Crimes Unit, still reeking of sawdust and paint.
The day before shooting, Minear had the set decorators remove the modern IKEA-like desks and replace them with the dented steal beasts more suitable for the hard-boiled gumshoes of yore, and would also provide superb cover from nuclear fallout. The design is a hat tip to LA Confidential, and it would be simple to ease back 60 years and find Sam Spade with his feet up on a desk, fedora hung low over a squinted eye.

It does have some interesting little arcs that will appeal to those of us who love to see a good story unfold over time, but it also fits nicely into the procedural model. Sort of like the X-Files in a way, in that you can watch individual episodes and enjoy the story within the episode, without being confused by the arc if you're not watching them in a particular order. IOW, it would work as well in syndication, but those who are faithful can see how the characters develop and change over time. There's recognizable hero's journey sort of story taking place subtlely over time, if you're one to watch and rewatch and discuss some of the metaphors going on.
The promos are built to cast the widest net possible. But the show works on both the mass audience and obsessive fandom levels, I think.
But I do see that it won't work for everyone. There's no supernatural element to any of it, it is horrifically violent in spots, and the main character could annoy some folks and be compelling to others. I love her, but keep in mind that Buffy was my girl, my favorite hero, ever.
At any rate, folks will give it a shot and either love it, hate it, or feel ambivalent, like anything else.

Inside preview: As promised, I watched the first three episodes of Fox's The Inside last weekend. The more I saw, the more I grew attached to the series, which follows a band of cute and clever FBI agents (led by the no-nonsense Peter Coyote!) who investigate violent crimes. What I liked about the show: It's created by Buffy vet Tim Minear, and it retains some of that epic, mystical feeling. The ensemble cast, led by newcomer Rachel Nichols, works together well. And so far, no mystery has ended the way I thought it would.
What didn't I like? The eps I saw are constructed Law & Order-style, with a clear beginning, middle and solution to the crime. If I know Minear and his writing team (which includes several Whedonverse alums), I expect a larger, more complicated storyline will eventually shine through. Also, I found Inside's violence and blood to be excessive at times. Judge for yourself when the show debuts June 8. Posted 1:46 p.m.
Question: Now that this riveting TV season is over, what are the new shows worth watching over the summer? Is The Inside any good? — John Talcott
Ausiello: I watched the first two episodes over the weekend, and given its pedigree — it was created by Angel's Tim Minear and 24's Howard Gordon — I was massively disappointed. Basically, if Medium and Profiler were to have sex, get pregnant and give birth to a really boring baby, its name would be The Inside. And nothing against leading lady Rachel Nichols; I'm sure she's a very nice person, but she's woefully miscast here. Paris Hilton would have made a more convincing FBI agent.

Bah! Allt annat är ju pg-13 på tvn ändå. Våld och blod behövs ibland.
