16. Inca Mummy Girl
This is also one of those episodes that normally doesn't get high marks but I kinda liked it. It was sweet and sad and creepy at the same time. You get to feel really sorry for the poor mummy girl. She wasn't a villain per se. She had just been robbed of her life when she was sacrificed some five hundred years ago and she only wanted to make up for lost time. Too bad that it required sucking the life out of people.
And Xander, poor Xander! His question to the Ampata girl "You're not a praying mantis, are you?" is prophetic. She's actually worse than the She-Mantis because Xander really comes to love her and she him. Too tragic but the life-sucking thing would have put a strain on their relationship, just as Xander said in the end. But they were adorably cute when they were together, Twinkies an' all. She liked his goofiness and she was sweet and, well, a hot little Inca mummy girl when not freeze dried.
Willow is still longing for Xander. Just get over it, you silly girl! But you can't help how you feel, especially when you're sixteen. I wonder if Xander is really oblivious to her feelings? Anyway, it must have been very hard for Willow to see him and Ampata together. Luckily for her this episode marks the first appearance of Oz, lead guitarist in a band with the hilarious name "Dingoes Ate my Baby". They don't meet here but Oz sure notices her, even in her Eskimo outfit. I still haven't made up my mind whether Eskimo-Willow was cute or just ridiculous.
In the beginning I didn't like Oz that much but he has grown on me. He's a cool and detached fellow with a sarcastic sense of humour.
Spoiler s2ep10 onwards:
And the fact that he becomes Willow's love interest is a great plus. She needs to get pass Xander so that Xander can, ehum, pursue different interests. He so needs a normal girlfriend, especially after this.
Xander (to Buffy): "I just, present company excluded, I have the worst taste in women of anyone in the world, ever."
Well, it can be argued that Cordelia isn't really going to be an improvement but at least she's human (yes she is, dammit!).
Oh, and Cordy looked *hot* in that Hawaiian Tropic costume! At this time Cordy is seeing the band singer, Devon, who doesn't demand a lot from women -- "she doesn't have to talk" -- but if there is anything Cordy does, it is talking. Maybe that's why they didn't stay together?
A funny side note, Cordelia's exchange student was "100% Swedish, 100% gorgeous...", but they did not hit it off. Well, since I'm 100% Swedish (I don't know about gorgeous) I so feel that I would've handled the situation better (*wishful thinking*). It was also nice that the writers recognized that Swedes do speak English. We actually speak very good English, we're probably one the best English speakers in Europe (after the UK of course) since we don't dub foreign TV shows and movies. *end chest thumping*
Buffy's predilection to use force is shown in this funny little exchange at the beginning:
Buffy: "I don't always use violence. Do I?"
Xander: "It's important that you believe that."
Well, someone has to do the dirty work even if it's not pretty and will hurt the sensibilities of others. There is a lesson in there for the world.
Rupert Giles: "I'll be back in the Middle Ages."
Miss Calendar: "Did you ever leave?"
