Mr Chases recension av "Some Assembly Required":
14. Some Assembly Required
This "Buffy" take on Frankenstein, or rather The Bride of Frankenstein, is quite good. It is also a rather sad tale. The younger brother Chris isn't really evil, he's just sticking up for his dead older brother Daryl when he re-animates him. He does so because the older footballer stood up for him when he was alive. Even Daryl isn't evil in a literal sense. He's just lonely and wants a companion, much like the original Frankenstein's monster. The creep in this tale is Chris's friend Eric who has no qualms about killing a girl to create a new one.
Of course the victim that has to be saved in this episode is screaming Cordelia and the one who actually saves her life is, lo and behold -- Xander! She's bound to start seeing him in a new light after this. She starts to thank him in earnest at the end and the clueless *jerk* just brushes her off, talking to Willow about why he never gets to date. Well, duh! One of Xander's best put downs on Cordy gets uttered in this episode after she says: "Why are these terrible things always happening to me?" and he coughs "Karma!"
The scene where the Scoobies find Giles practicing his pickup lines on a chair is priceless as is their bantering him about Ms Calendar. And when he stutters as he's trying to ask her out it is she who asks him out instead. They are just too cute for words!
Their date is at a football game where Giles says: "I do think it is rather odd that a nation that prides itself on its virility should feel compelled to strap on 40 pounds of protective gear just in order to play rugby." Hear, hear! While I'm not English and really as unfamiliar with rugby as I am with American football, I have, as a Swede, never understood the phenomenon of American football. In my mind football is what Americans call soccer and American football is just plain silly. Why even call it football when the ball, which isn't even round, is hardly ever kicked?
Buffy's little stunt in the previous episode worked. Angel is jealous of Xander but he reveals it has more to do with the fact that Xander gets to see her in sunlight. Oh my, how tragic their relationship is! *sniff* But the laugh line of the episode Buffy's: "I'm an old-fashioned gal. I was raised to believe that men dig up the corpses and women have the babies."
Rupert Giles: "I'll be back in the Middle Ages."
Miss Calendar: "Did you ever leave?"
