Mr Chases recension av "Phases":
27. Phases
At first it looked like it was going to be a smooth ride for Willow and Oz but now it seems more like a non-smoochies ride and Willow is not happy about it. Oz however, has a good reason even if it takes waking up nude in the woods for him to realize his lycanthropic nature. That's right, three days each month the Oz-man becomes Were-Oz. You'd be surprised that it took "Buffy" this far to deal with werewolves and you can appreciate Giles's eagerness: "It's one of the classics. I'm sure my books and I are in for a fascinating afternoon."
Since almost everyone in the gang gets together with something supernatural (Except Xander, depending on how you define Cordy ;-)) it should come as no surprise that there is more to Oz than meets the eye. And in the end Willow doesn't seem to mind: "Well, I like you. You're nice, and you're funny, and you don't smoke. Yeah, okay, werewolf, but that's not all the time. I mean, three days out of the month I'm not much fun to be around either." Indeed, but we could have done without the anti-smoking thing. There is evil and there is way lesser evil (more of a bad habit, really). Let's get some perspective here, guys!
The werewolf hunter, Cain, was also a bit overdone. His rampart sexism was clichéd, as is the general hunters-are-bad premise. I do agree however that you shouldn't kill werewolves (where they to exist). They're not demonically possessed like vampires. They're just people with a little extra bite a couple of days a month, just like women. Oh, what did you say, now I'm the sexist? I was just quoting Willow. Honest, I swear... I can allow myself that since this episode was a bit on the male bashing side. Mind you, I enjoyed it very much.
Giles: "It acts on pure instinct. No conscience, predatory and aggressive."
Buffy: "In other words, your typical male."
Xander: "On behalf of my gender, hey!"
Giles: "Yes, let's not jump to any conclusions."
Buffy: "I didn't jump. I took a tiny step, and there conclusions were."
I'm with Giles and Xander on this one. We're not that bad, are we?
Buffy: "Welcome to the mystery that is men. I think it goes something like, they grow body hair, they lose all ability to tell you what they really want."
Oh, like women are the ones with the most clearly formulated wishes. Men are not mind readers. *end small rant* But the "body hair" part was funny considering Oz's nature.
What is it with the Oz family anyway? First Oz takes his werewolfness in his usual cool manner ("Huh?") and then he calmly has a conversation on the phone with aunt Maureen on whether little cousin Jordy is a werewolf or not. Who are these people and by the way, does Oz really have any parents? And were did those chains come from? Not the kind of ordinary stuff you just have lying around the house, is it?
Funny thing, it is Xander who is actually right that there is something dangerous about Oz. I like to chalk it up to his hyena sense and not to him being overtly concerned about Willow, but that's probably rationalizing it a bit too much. He is way too insensitive about this to Cordelia. She's plainly troubled by his obsessiveness towards the other female Scoobies and I have to agree with her. I mean he is making out with Cordelia for crying out loud, the prettiest girl in school, every geek's wettest dream!
Cordelia: "Look around. We're in my daddy's car, it's just the two of us, there is a beautiful, big full moon outside tonight. It doesn't get more romantic than this. So shut up!"
Yeah, shut up and appreciate what you got, Xander! But it seems like the theme for Xander is to, as Willow so aptly put it, look around at everything he doesn't have and not realize what he does have. Interestingly enough Willow says that in an open hearted conversation with Cordelia of all people at the Bronze. This is the girl she just before have called a "skanky ho" to Buffy. Meow! Xander really should be worried if those two girls get any closer.
And how official is the Xander and Cordelia relationship anyway? They're out on a date (sort of) even if it's just parking at Lover's Lane, so the end should be nigh! She's leaning on him for comfort in the school parking lot, in broad daylight (gasp!). The repercussions must be around the corner. All the while she seems, at least for now, to be the one more interested in taking it seriously. Why else upgrading the broom closet for her daddy's car? And you can tell that she's really hurt that Xander has a tendency to ramble on about Willow and Buffy.
At the same time Xander can be sensitive and heroic to. He gets to stake Theresa the vamp and comforts Buffy about Angel. Well, he's supposed to be a teenager so he can be inconsistent. And his latent homophobia when he confronted Larry was rather funny. I wonder what Larry, who now erroneously believes that Xander also is gay, will say when he finds out about Cordelia?
Lastly a small nit-pick. It is never revealed how are Buffy and Xander are going to address the question of Theresa's missing corpse. They went to the funeral parlour, Buffy even signed her name in the condolence book, and then Theresa the vampire was literally dusted. The undertaker is bound to notice the absent body. Too bad about Theresa by the way. She was a cutie.
