Mr Chase recension av skörden:
2. The Harvest
This is the second episode and the last half of what originally was a feature length pilot. They should really be watched together as a whole as it was intended from the beginning.
The Harvest comes closer and it is the time when the Master shall rise from the in-between-dimensions and wreck havoc upon the world, with a little help from stand-in Brian sucking blood at a local joint called the Bronze. Of course the slayer must stop it, with a little help from what is now known as the "Slayerettes" or the "Scooby Gang".
Considering that they just learned that Sunnydale is infested with vampires the gang take it really cool, perhaps too cool. Even the vampiring and subsequent death of their old friend Jesse doesn't rub off on them much. Xander is very loyal guy, if a bit awkward, which can be seen when he goes after Buffy when she goes down under to rescue Jesse.
We also get to see Willow growing a spine when she stands up for her new friend Buffy with Cordelia in computer class. And the "deliver" line is priceless.
Well, the whole big sucking thing at the Bronze of course doesn't turn out the way the Master would like because there's a new slayer in town. Buffy saves the day (or night rather) when the vamps attack. And how gullible can a vampire be? I mean "sunrise", come on! ROTFL. And we actually get to see Xander saving Cordy (from vampire Jesse), not that she thanks him for it.
But it strains the credulity that no-one at school reacts to what happened at the Bronze. I mean, they could clearly be seen as vampires sucking the life out of some people. How much in denial can you be? Grotesque gangs with gross looking faces my butt!
All in all a splendid first instalment of a terrific series which of course demands a fair amount of suspension of disbelief but which nevertheless takes it's viewers seriously and is full of wit and charm and intelligent dialogue, not to mention mature themes despite it's genre premise. For those that haven't been subjected to the Buffyverse the title "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" may sound rather silly but make no mistake, despite it's humour, it is NOT a silly show. So there!
Rupert Giles: "I'll be back in the Middle Ages."
Miss Calendar: "Did you ever leave?"
